Innergex Renewable Energy selected Mortenson as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor to build the Boswell Springs Wind Project located in Albany County, Wyoming. Mortenson mobilized and started working in June 2023, and is scheduled for completion in the fall of this year.
The scope of work for the 330-megawatt (MW) project included access roads, foundations, underground collection, substation, and erection of nearly 100 turbines. Upon completion, the project is expected to produce power generation of approximately 1,160 gigawatt-hours/year. It will connect into the PacifiCorp power grid at the PacifiCorp Freezeout Substation in Carbon County, WY located approximately 34.5 miles west of the generating facility via the Last Mile Transmission Project.
The project site is located on undeveloped privately held land used primarily for cattle ranching. While the project area is approximately 21,500 acres, the actual operational footprint of the project will use just a small fraction of that land to host components. The turbines will be aligned to form roughly 10 rows (north-south) and allow for the continued use of ranching these lands through construction and operations.
One unique challenge the project team faced was the consideration of the state-protected species, Swift Fox. Because of the known use of the project area for hunting and breeding activities of this species, avoidance and minimization measures such as seasonal construction timing restrictions were implemented. The team has been mindfully aware and respectful of their work around this protected species.
The project team has embraced the local community at every opportunity, volunteering at a local animal shelter upcycling cable spools for goat obstacle courses, trimming hooves, and picking up trash as well as collecting professional clothing for a local university career fair. The team has built a strong team culture enjoying the area’s recreation activities on the Poudre River and enjoying their night builds with some live music at evening Stretch ‘n Bend.
