The introduction of European hedgehogs to New Zealand in the 19th century, initially seen as a solution to garden pest problems, has led to an ecological crisis. These seemingly innocuous creatures have become voracious predators, threatening the very existence of New Zealand's unique and endangered wildlife. The Department of Conservation (DOC) now views hedgehogs as a significant threat, particularly to ground-nesting birds and native invertebrates. This transformation from garden pest controllers to invasive predators highlights the unintended consequences of human intervention in natural ecosystems.
The hedgehog's diet is diverse and includes native insects, lizards, frogs, snails, and the eggs and chicks of ground-nesting birds. Their impact is especially severe in braided river systems, where threatened birds like banded dotterels, black-fronted terns, and pied oystercatchers build nests directly on the ground. A single hedgehog can disrupt an entire tern colony, causing birds to abandon their nests, leaving eggs and chicks vulnerable. Research shows that hedgehog predation is a major issue, with a 19% lethal event rate in the Mackenzie Basin in the 1990s, rising to 78% in the 2000s.
The problem is exacerbated by the fact that many affected species are already endangered. The black stilt and black-fronted tern are classified as nationally critical and threatened, respectively. To combat this, DOC employs predator-control programs, aiming to eradicate hedgehogs from areas where they threaten native wildlife. Long-term control measures resemble those used for other introduced predators, such as rats, stoats, and possums. This case study serves as a cautionary tale, demonstrating how well-intentioned introductions can lead to ecological imbalances, and the need for careful consideration of the potential impacts on local ecosystems.
