Explora's Thrilling Honeybee Stakes Victory! Road to the Kentucky Oaks! (2026)

Explora's Journey to the Honeybee Stakes Victory: A Story of Determination and Talent

In a thrilling display of racing prowess, Explora secured her first graded stakes win in the 2026 Honeybee Stakes, earning 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks. This 3-year-old daughter of Blame, campaigned by the renowned trio of Michael Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman, showcased her heart and determination in a race that captivated spectators at Oaklawn Park.

Explora's journey to the top began with a strategic move. Under the guidance of jockey Flavien Prat, she settled comfortably behind the pacesetting Knickleandime, who set a strong pace with fractions of :23.45 and :47.70 through the opening half mile. As the race progressed, Explora made her move, taking the lead with a powerful surge coming into the top of the stretch. Despite the valiant efforts of Counting Stars, trained by Mark Casse, Explora held on to win by a commanding 3/4 lengths, covering the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:43.52.

Prat's commentary highlights Explora's professionalism and talent: "She was a real pro. We had a good draw. She jumped well, and I was able to get her right off the pace and traveling well all the way around. When she turned for home, and I asked her, she gave me a good run. And at that point, I didn't think anybody was going to make a run at her, and Counting Stars came. And as soon as she felt her, she just regrouped and went on, so that's a good sign."

Explora's performance has been consistently impressive, never finishing worse than second in seven starts. Her recent success includes a second-place finish in the 2025 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, showcasing her potential as a top contender in the racing world.

The Honeybee Stakes victory marks a significant milestone for Explora, bred in Kentucky by Mesingw Farms and out of the Bernardini mare Collections Choice. Her journey began with a purchase at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and continued with a sale at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. The current owners, Pegram, Watson, and Weitman, expressed their pride and excitement, with Pegram stating, "It feels pretty good. Beautiful day. She's a beautiful horse, and we got a good win today. We're thinking about May and Churchill Downs (Kentucky Oaks), and she looked the part today. Hopefully, we can get there."

The race also featured other notable horses, such as Sneaky Good, trained by Brad Cox, and Search Party, the Martha Washington Stakes winner, both finishing in the third and fourth positions, respectively.

Explora's victory in the Honeybee Stakes not only solidifies her position at the top of the leaderboard with 95 points but also sets the stage for her future endeavors, including the prestigious Kentucky Oaks.
