The operation, carried out during the winter of 2001, was a massive undertaking. A 19-person team worked tirelessly to cover the entire island, using GPS technology to guide their efforts. The winter was chosen partly because many seabirds were away from the island, reducing the risk of disturbing their breeding cycles. Despite the harsh conditions, the team's dedication and precision paid off, as they successfully eradicated the rat population.
The ecological recovery was swift and dramatic. Within a few years, Campbell Island snipe, which had previously been restricted to a much smaller predator-free refuge, returned to the main island. Researchers surveying the island in 2006 recorded at least 22 adult snipe, five dependent chicks, and a nest, confirming that the species had successfully recolonised and was breeding there. This return was a significant milestone, as it demonstrated the island's potential to support a diverse range of native species.
However, the island's recovery is a gradual process. The landscape still bears the scars of decades of agricultural activity, grazing, and the introduction of other species. Yet, the removal of rats has been a crucial step in the restoration of Campbell Island's natural balance.
