A heated political battle is unfolding in Pakistan, with opposition parties taking a stand for the health of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The situation has sparked intense debate and controversy, leaving many questions unanswered.
The Fight for Imran Khan's Health
Opposition parliamentarians, united under the banners of PTI and Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP), have embarked on a courageous mission. They are staging a sit-in at Parliament House and KP House in Islamabad, demanding immediate action for Imran Khan's deteriorating vision.
The catalyst for this protest was a revelation made in the Supreme Court on Thursday. It was reported that Imran Khan's right eye had only 15% vision remaining, a shocking development that sent shockwaves through the political landscape. In response, TTAP announced a sit-in outside Parliament House, and the protest began after Friday prayers, continuing through the night.
Participants in the sit-in are adamant that Imran Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for specialized treatment. They claim that the opposition leaders are "trapped" inside Parliament House, with the police denying them access to food and water.
TTAP leader Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar attempted to deliver breakfast to the protesters but was stopped by the authorities, a move he described as "insensitive" and "heartless.
"This behavior is nothing short of 'yazidiat,'" Khokhar declared.
The TTAP spokesperson, Akhunzada Hussain Ahmed Yousafzai, confirmed that the sit-in was ongoing at both locations. He expressed concern that even basic necessities like breakfast were being denied entry into Parliament, and no one was allowed to enter or exit the premises.
"The sit-in will persist until our demands are met," Yousafzai asserted.
PTI leader Shandana Gulzar criticized the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi for granting four days for Imran's examination, questioning whether such a timeframe would be given if it were the CJP's daughter or Nawaz Sharif.
"The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister is leading a sit-in at KP House, protesting against the government's unjust behavior. We demand that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital," Gulzar stated.
She further alleged that the government was waiting for further damage to Imran's eye, a claim that has sparked outrage among the opposition.
The protest is being led by prominent figures, including TTAP Chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Senator Ali Zafar, Asad Qaiser, Junaid Akbar, and others.
Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) spokesperson Aslam Ghauri condemned the "violence" against the TTAP protest outside Parliament, accusing the government of "making a mockery of democracy" and "playing around with the Constitution.
"The fake forced government has gone mad in the fire of revenge," Ghauri quipped.
The JUI-F leader demanded the immediate release of all detained leaders and blamed the government's attitude for the anarchy in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
"Do the rulers want to spread this anarchy across the country?" he asked.
Meanwhile, KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi urged protesters across the country to remain peaceful, emphasizing that Imran Khan's health was more important than politics.
"At this time, those workers who have stepped up on their own without any official call—wherever you are, stay peaceful, and nearby workers, support them. All of you must remain peaceful going forward as well," Afridi stressed.
He warned that those opposing Imran Khan were capable of extreme measures and might include provocative elements to divert the peaceful protest.
"Keep an eye on all provocative individuals and continue the peaceful protest. Do not believe any negative or false propaganda unless it is verified by Imran Khan sahib's family and party," Afridi added.
Imran's sister, Aleema Khanum, criticized the Supreme Court for its alleged inaction, stating that the court order should have been for Imran Khan's immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital.
"Without a court order, Imran Khan is not going to receive any emergency medical care. The court order has to wait until the CJP returns to office from the Cholistan jeep rally!" she exclaimed.
PTI leader Omar Ayub Khan echoed similar sentiments, demanding that the CJP and the courts act promptly to ensure Imran's access to qualified doctors and medical facilities.
Imran's personal physician, Dr. Faisal Sultan, also weighed in, suggesting that the PTI founder be moved to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for expert care.
"The other important aspect to consider is that many times retinal problems are a reflection of underlying illnesses, which also require management, diagnosis, and review. This is not only to ensure that the afflicted eye can be improved but also to safeguard the good eye," Dr. Sultan explained.
He emphasized the need for specialists to work in an environment with high standards of care and the right infrastructure, highlighting Shifa International Hospital as an internationally certified institution capable of providing such care.
Dr. Sultan requested that he or Dr. Asim Yousuf be included in any medical team formed for Imran's care, to provide valuable insight into the ex-premier's medical history.
In contrast, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry assured the opposition that Imran Khan would be taken wherever he prefers for medical treatment, stating that there would be no negligence in the matter.
"Wherever he wants to go for a check-up, he will be taken. If he wants to go to Al-Shifa Eye Trust, then he will be taken there. There will be no negligence in the matter," Chaudhry said.
He called on the opposition to refrain from politicizing the issue, emphasizing its sensitivity.
"This is a medical issue, not a political one," he added.
The minister dismissed claims of Imran's deteriorating vision, stating that the issue did not surface during his sister's visit or during previous medical examinations.
"The complaint was not brought up anywhere before," he said.
He further clarified that a new medical report would be issued soon, and Imran would be examined by eye specialists or super-specialists to ensure he receives the best possible treatment.
